The Orchard is a contemporary garden landscaping project in the Chalfont St Giles area of Buckinghamshire. A renewed terrace, Millboard decking and a bespoke Umbris canopy bring a fresh look to the outdoor space, with the careful detailing that defines Steve Richardson and Rees De Liege’s approach at S&R Landscapes.
The garden had been designed more than ten years before this refurbishment. The new brief focused on updating the terrace areas to complement the substantial family home and make the space more enjoyable to use.
A modern terrace for a family garden
The owners wanted new decking, planting and lighting, together with an Umbris canopy and a matching balustrade. The aim was a clear, coordinated design that suited the scale and formal character of the property.
More than 14 tonnes of landscaping materials went into the project. Behind the finished terrace was considerable planning, material handling and coordination between the different trades and specialist fabricators.
Millboard decking and a bespoke Umbris canopy
Millboard Enhanced Grain decking in Coppered Oak introduces a warm, wood-effect surface beside the house. A step connects the terrace levels, while LED lighting with bronze and black fittings adds detail to the finished space.
The raised terrace is framed by aluminium and steel elements, giving the garden a stronger relationship with the architecture. The Umbris canopy provides a focal point, with stainless steel climbing cables fixed to its main structure to support planting.
Planting and metalwork with a coordinated finish
A raised blockwork planter sits within the decking beneath the canopy. Its rendered finish and natural granite coping introduce contrasting textures, while herbs reflect the owners’ preferences and bring planting close to the outdoor living area.
The bespoke balustrade was coated to match the Umbris structure. Stainless steel cables and specially manufactured turnbuckles complete the metalwork, bringing consistency to the terrace edges and vertical features.
The project involved more than 140 hours of design work, discussions, meetings and sample selection. That preparation helped the decking, canopy, balustrade, planting and lighting come together as one considered space.
