Replacing Composite Decking in Harefield

Harefield

A tired canal-side deck became a welcoming outdoor space, with Millboard decking, integrated lighting and carefully finished landscaping.

Beside the Grand Union Canal in Harefield, this garden had a distinctive setting but needed practical improvements. The project combined replacement decking with patio restoration, new fencing and a new gate.

Steve Richardson and Rees De Liege bring experienced hands and attention to detail to their work at S&R Landscapes. Projects like this show why the finish, the surrounding landscaping and the care taken on site all matter.

Replacing the Existing Composite Decking

The original grooved composite decking had moved considerably, raising concerns for the homeowner. Discolouration and staining also detracted from the canal-side setting.

After comparing samples, the client chose Millboard Enhanced Grain in Limed Oak. Its pale finish and wood-grain texture suited the garden and created a lighter appearance beside the water.

The work involved removing and replacing 52 square metres of decking. For Steve and Rees, a professional decking installation means considering the supporting structure, fixings and edge details alongside the boards you see.

Deck Lighting Connected to the Home

The homeowner wanted lighting built into the new deck. The lights were selected to work with the existing Lutron smart-home system, allowing control through the client’s phone.

Planning the lighting alongside the decking allowed it to form part of the installation, adding evening interest to the finished space.

Patio Restoration, Fencing and a New Gate

The wider improvements helped bring the garden together. Existing patio joints were cleared, the paving was cleaned and the surface was repointed with Flowpoint. The fence and gate were also replaced.

The decking replacement and associated works were completed over two weeks, giving the homeowner a refreshed outdoor space that complemented its surroundings.

The Client’s View of the Workmanship

The original client testimonial praised the team’s workmanship, courtesy and care on site:

“Their workmanship was top class. They were exceptionally polite and always cleaned up everything at the end of each working day.”

These are the qualities Steve and Rees value in professional landscaping: careful work, respect for your home and attention to the details that make a project a positive experience.

Our approach

We believe a well-designed garden should be a pleasure to live in, thoughtfully built and made to last.

For us, good design starts with listening. We take time to understand how you want to use your garden, what matters to you and the character of your home.

We bring the same care to construction as we do to design. From the preparation beneath a patio to the finishing details around a border, each part contributes to the quality of the whole garden.

We favour materials suited to their purpose and planting that can thrive in its surroundings. We consider how your garden will mature and how much maintenance you want, creating a space you can enjoy for years to come.
