Millboard Decking in Chalfont St Giles — Crafted by Steve and Rees

Curved edges, a chevron dining terrace and carefully finished walkways make this Chalfont St Giles garden a showcase for Steve and Rees’s craftsmanship. Their construction brings the decking, paths and surrounding landscape together, creating an outdoor space that complements the contemporary home.

The project required more than laying boards across a straightforward platform. Changes in direction, contrasting borders and curved details called for accurate setting out, thoughtful sequencing and care at every junction.

Steve and Rees bring the garden to life

The original outdoor space had awkward levels and hard surfaces that offered little connection between the house and garden. The new scheme creates a generous main terrace, a dedicated dining area and routes linking the different spaces.

Steve and Rees translated the garden design into the finished landscape, coordinating the supporting construction with the visible board patterns, edges and transitions.

Their attention to these relationships gives the terrace its composed appearance. Lines connect cleanly, borders define the spaces and the decking feels closely related to the architecture of the house.

Curved decking that connects the spaces

Soft curves bring movement to the layout, balancing the straight lines of the glazing and building. They guide the eye away from the house and towards the garden, while connecting walkways make the different areas easy to explore.

Constructing these curves required Steve and Rees to control the shape of the supporting framework and finish each board accurately at the perimeter. Consistent detailing allows the curved edges to read as continuous lines.

The walkways received the same consideration. Their junctions with the terraces form part of the overall composition, helping the garden feel connected from one area to the next.

A chevron terrace for outdoor dining

The dining terrace introduces a distinctive chevron board pattern, giving this part of the garden a character of its own. The angled layout adds direction and frames a welcoming place for meals with family and friends.

A pattern like this depends on precise installation. Steve and Rees carefully set out the board angles, aligned the meeting points and coordinated the cuts with the surrounding border.

The finished surface demonstrates their care over the details. The pattern feels balanced within the terrace and contributes to the wider garden without dominating it.

Antiqued boards with Burnt Cedar borders

Millboard Enhanced Grain in Antiqued provides the principal decking finish. Its softly weathered appearance complements the house and introduces texture alongside the surrounding planting.

Burnt Cedar borders add a darker contrast, defining the terrace edges and emphasising the layout. The two finishes give the garden a coordinated palette with clear, deliberate lines.

Steve and Rees carried these contrasting details through the installation, resolving the connections between straight runs, angled boards and curved sections.

Decking within a complete garden

The terrace forms the centrepiece of a wider landscaping scheme. Paths, planting, levels and views all contribute to how the garden looks and how the owners use it.

Steve and Rees’s work brings these elements together. The main terrace offers space to relax, the chevron area provides a setting for dining, and the connecting routes encourage movement through the garden.

This project shows the difference skilled construction makes to a detailed design: an individual garden, carefully built and inviting to use.

Our approach

We believe a well-designed garden should be a pleasure to live in, thoughtfully built and made to last.

For us, good design starts with listening. We take time to understand how you want to use your garden, what matters to you and the character of your home.

We bring the same care to construction as we do to design. From the preparation beneath a patio to the finishing details around a border, each part contributes to the quality of the whole garden.

We favour materials suited to their purpose and planting that can thrive in its surroundings. We consider how your garden will mature and how much maintenance you want, creating a space you can enjoy for years to come.
