Low maintenance garden design and decking in Amersham

Amersham

Three connected levels, a sunny decking terrace and carefully chosen planting gave this Amersham garden a clearer layout with less routine upkeep.

Steve Richardson and Rees De Liege design and professionally landscape gardens at S&R Landscapes, combining practical planning with careful workmanship. This project shows how a simple garden can become a more inviting place to relax and entertain.

More Time to Enjoy the Garden

The original garden consisted mainly of lawn, a small paved patio, a path and a raised planter. The homeowners wanted to reduce regular maintenance and create a comfortable seating and dining area that made the most of the sun.

The brief called for a manageable garden with a stronger sense of purpose, while retaining useful parts of the existing layout.

Three Levels with a Clear Layout

A fall of approximately 500 mm across the garden shaped the design. Three distinct areas worked with the slope: the existing patio, a central artificial lawn and a new decking terrace.

Stepped connections brought the areas together, giving each part of the garden a clear role. For Steve and Rees, careful setting out helps changes in level feel like a considered part of the garden.

The existing raised planter was retained and given a planting scheme to introduce greenery and seasonal interest. A contemporary grey finish on the planter and fence coordinated the boundaries with the new landscaping.

A Trex Terrace for the Evening Sun

The decking was positioned where the garden catches the last of the evening sun, creating a welcoming place to sit or dine outdoors.

Trex Transcend in Gravel Path was paired with an Island Mist border, giving the terrace a defined edge and a coordinated grey palette. The deck also formed part of the final change in level.

The materials reduced some routine tasks, including mowing the central lawn area and regularly refinishing timber decking. Cleaning the surfaces and caring for the planting remain part of keeping the garden looking its best.

Our approach

We believe a well-designed garden should be a pleasure to live in, thoughtfully built and made to last.

For us, good design starts with listening. We take time to understand how you want to use your garden, what matters to you and the character of your home.

We bring the same care to construction as we do to design. From the preparation beneath a patio to the finishing details around a border, each part contributes to the quality of the whole garden.

We favour materials suited to their purpose and planting that can thrive in its surroundings. We consider how your garden will mature and how much maintenance you want, creating a space you can enjoy for years to come.
