Composite decking and garden landscaping in Tring

Tring

A Golden Oak Millboard terrace, bespoke balustrade and new garden layout completed this contemporary home extension in Tring.

Steve Richardson and Rees De Liege combine practical landscaping experience with careful attention to materials and finishing at S&R Landscapes. This project shows how decking, steps and boundary details can connect a renovated home with its garden.

The extension featured white render and western red cedar cladding. The outdoor space needed a coordinated finish, with a larger terrace and a clear route to the garden below.

A Terrace Designed Around the Home

The homeowners wanted a new decking terrace, suitable steps, a new lawn and fencing, together with work to complete an existing retaining wall. Keeping routine maintenance manageable was an important part of the brief.

The deck’s dimensions were planned around the 3.6-metre board lengths, making efficient use of the material and reducing cutting waste. Its colour was chosen to sit comfortably beside the cedar cladding.

An artificial lawn, new fencing and treated timber retaining sections completed the wider landscaping, bringing the different elements into one scheme.

Golden Oak Decking and a Bespoke Balustrade

The homeowners chose Millboard in Golden Oak for its timber-like appearance and warm colour. Matching boards were used across the deck’s front face, giving the raised terrace a consistent finish.

An Accoya balustrade, finished in grey with Owatrol Solid Colour Stain, introduced a contrasting detail. Decorative metal panels with circular patterns kept views through to the rest of the garden.

The combination of warm decking, grey timber and patterned metal complemented the contemporary extension. For Steve and Rees, careful alignment, cutting and material connections are what bring these individual choices together.

A Small Planting Feature Beneath the Steps

The planting was deliberately restrained. A tree fern, Dicksonia antarctica, and a hart’s-tongue fern, Asplenium scolopendrium, created a tucked-away feature beneath the steps.

Their foliage softened the construction without introducing extensive borders. The garden was planned to reduce routine tasks, while cleaning the surfaces and caring for the plants remain part of its upkeep.

Our approach

We believe a well-designed garden should be a pleasure to live in, thoughtfully built and made to last.

For us, good design starts with listening. We take time to understand how you want to use your garden, what matters to you and the character of your home.

We bring the same care to construction as we do to design. From the preparation beneath a patio to the finishing details around a border, each part contributes to the quality of the whole garden.

We favour materials suited to their purpose and planting that can thrive in its surroundings. We consider how your garden will mature and how much maintenance you want, creating a space you can enjoy for years to come.
