A new Ecodek terrace made the sunny rear of this Islington garden a more inviting place to relax and entertain.
Steve Richardson and Rees De Liege bring practical skill and careful workmanship to decking and landscaping at S&R Landscapes. This project shows how steps, planting and coordinated finishes can bring a straightforward deck into the wider garden.
A Deck for the Evening Sun
The homeowners wanted to make better use of the back of their garden, where the sun lingered at the end of the day. They had researched composite decking and chosen Ecodek Heritage as their preferred material.
A site survey and concept sketches established the layout before the project was quoted. The aim was an outdoor space for entertaining with manageable routine upkeep.
Working with the Existing Patio
The deck was built above an existing concrete patio, with the change in height incorporated into the layout. Two steps connected the terrace to the garden, and matching fascia boards finished the risers and exposed sides.
Overgrown climbing roses were cut back, and treated timber sleepers formed a planter at the rear. The decking edge extended over the sleepers, creating a neat connection between the terrace and planting area.
For Steve and Rees, considering these junctions during setting out helps the finished deck feel like part of the garden.
Ecodek Heritage in Brecon Shale
The chosen Brecon Shale colour provided a natural-looking tone that complemented the surrounding space. Colour-matched Ecodek screws were countersunk to give the surface a tidy finish.
The completed deck measured 27 square metres, and the installation took four days from start to finish.
Composite decking reduces some of the upkeep associated with timber, but regular cleaning remains important. Steve and Rees can help you consider both appearance and ongoing care when choosing your decking.
A Porcelain Inset for a Distinctive Detail
The project also included an inset formed from two 600 × 1,200 mm porcelain tiles, supported within the deck structure. This introduced a contrasting surface where the homeowners wanted to position their existing fire bowl.
Any use of a fire feature needs to follow the decking and fire-feature manufacturers’ requirements; the presence of porcelain alone does not establish that an arrangement is suitable.
