A beautifully considered outdoor space begins with the relationship between the house, garden and people using it. Steve and Rees brought those elements together in this distinctive two-level terrace, combining warm Deckorators Excursion Bali decking with black steel balustrades and naturally weathered metal detailing.
The finished scheme connects an upper balcony with a generous lower terrace, creating space for entertaining, relaxing and enjoying the view. Its appeal comes from the overall composition and the care given to each junction, edge and change in level.
Thoughtful decking design by Steve and Rees
The house sits above the garden, making the connection between levels central to the design. The upper balcony and lower terrace needed to feel comfortable individually while belonging to the same outdoor space.
Steve and Rees coordinated the decking surfaces, staircase and balustrades to create that continuity. Using Bali boards across both levels gives the scheme a consistent character, while the lower platform provides a spacious setting for furniture and outdoor dining.
The result makes the most of the elevated outlook and gives the owners more reasons to spend time outside.
Bali: warm colour with contemporary detail
Deckorators Excursion in Bali brings rich brown tones and a timber-inspired surface to the terrace. The colour provides warmth against the black balustrades and complements the orange-brown patina of the weathered steel.
This restrained palette gives the project its identity. The decking, guarding and metal edges each introduce a different texture, yet work together without competing for attention.
Steve and Rees carried the same care through the board layout and finishing details, creating clean lines across the platforms and neatly resolved connections around the steps.
Heat-mitigation technology for sunny outdoor spaces
Deckorators Excursion uses Surestone technology, combining minerals and polymers in a decking board without wood fibre. Its heat-mitigating construction is designed to reduce heat build-up and improve comfort underfoot in sunny conditions.
Deckorators describes an infrared-reflective cap that helps limit solar heat gain, supported by a mineral-based core that contributes to reduced heat retention.
All decking can become hot in strong direct sunlight, and surface temperature varies with colour, weather and exposure. Heat mitigation is nevertheless a useful consideration when choosing a terrace for outdoor living and barefoot use.
Black balustrades and weathered steel
Fortitude Traditional steel balustrades frame the raised terraces and follow the connecting staircase. Their black finish gives the scheme a clear outline while allowing views through to the garden.
Weathered steel perimeter details and step upstands introduce a warmer contrast. Once the desired patina had developed, the steel was treated with Owatrol Oil to help protect the surface while retaining its character.
These details show how Steve and Rees bring different materials together to create an individual, carefully finished outdoor space.
Care beneath the finished surface
The support system incorporates recycled-plastic posts set into concrete, with protective decking tape applied over the upper faces of the structural members.
Steve and Rees coordinated the framework with the finished levels, staircase and decking layout. This concealed construction provides the foundation for the visible craftsmanship above.
