Textured concrete, galvanised steel and natural gravel gave this Beaconsfield driveway and garden a distinctive architectural character.
Steve Richardson and Rees De Liege bring practical construction skills and careful workmanship to their landscaping at S&R Landscapes. Sunnyside shows how substantial groundwork and attention to texture can turn a bold design into a coordinated outdoor space.
A Simple Palette with Strong Character
The brief was to bring the house and garden together through a deliberately restrained selection of materials. Concrete, galvanised steel, stone and gravel formed the main palette, with timber accents and planting providing contrast.
The angular layout echoed the remodelled property. Rather than relying on decorative finishes, the scheme drew its character from the shapes, surfaces and connections between materials.
Substantial Groundwork Behind the Finished Garden
Managing the levels involved moving more than 60 tonnes of material to other parts of the garden and removing over 64 tonnes from the site. Around 24 tonnes of new concrete were also brought in.
In total, more than 168 tonnes of material were moved during the project. This scale of work made planning access, deliveries and the construction sequence an important part of the landscaping.
For Steve and Rees, the quality of the finished space begins with this preparation, followed by careful setting out and consistent attention to the details.
Timber-Grain Concrete and Gabion Details
The retaining walls were cast using timber-lined formwork. Brushing the timber before the pour emphasised its grain, leaving an imprint on the finished concrete surface.
This gave the concrete a distinctive texture, connecting its strong forms with the natural character of wood. Galvanised steel gabions and a scaffold-style handrail complemented the pared-back materials.
Grasscrete formed the ground-level driveway and path elements. Golden-brown gravel softened the palette, with CED supplying the colour selected for the scheme.
Planting to Soften the Geometry
Lawn, wildflowers, hedging and specimen trees balanced the hard landscaping. Dedicated wildflower areas introduced a changing layer of colour alongside the concrete, steel and gravel.
- Lawn: Sovereign Turf.
- Wildflower mixes: Woodland Edge and Treasure Chest.
- Hedging: Ligustrum ovalifolium.
- Trees: Tibetan cherry, olive and loquat.
The planting gave the garden a softer, seasonal character while allowing the architectural materials to remain prominent.
