A carefully finished Millboard deck restored the centrepiece of this contemporary Beaconsfield garden, with concealed lighting and discreet access panels.
Steve Richardson and Rees De Liege bring practical skill and attention to detail to decking and landscaping at S&R Landscapes. This project demonstrates the value of combining material selection with precise installation and thoughtful finishing.
Replacing Decking in an Existing Landscaped Garden
The garden already had a symmetrical layout, restrained planting and a porcelain terrace surrounding a central decking platform. The replacement needed to work with these existing features.
The previous decking, installed by another company, had warped, discoloured and deteriorated soon after installation. Following an inspection, replacement was recommended to restore the use and appearance of the terrace.
Choosing Millboard in Smoked Oak
The homeowners reviewed several decking options before selecting Millboard Enhanced Grain in Smoked Oak. Its colour and textured finish complemented the contemporary surroundings and contrasted with the porcelain paving.
Removal and disposal of the old decking, followed by installation of the replacement, took four days.
For Steve and Rees, the quality of a deck depends on the complete installation. Careful setting out, suitable fixings and attention to the connections between boards, edges and adjoining surfaces all contribute to the finished result.
Concealed Lighting with a Warm Finish
The homeowners wanted lighting incorporated into the decking, with electrical work handled by their own electrician.
Recessed aluminium channels housed LED strips behind clipped-in diffusers. This concealed the individual LEDs while allowing a warm-white lighting effect around the deck.
Collingwood uplights were fitted flush with the decking beside the planters, adding another layer of evening interest. The lighting helped connect the central terrace with the surrounding garden.
Discreet Access Beneath the Deck
Lift-out panels provided access below the decking. Recessed finger latches kept the fittings unobtrusive while allowing the panels to be opened when needed.
Details like these bring appearance and practicality together. They reflect the care Steve and Rees give to their work, considering future access alongside the visible finish.
