Garden landscaping in Aston Clinton

Alpine Hideaway brings together textured stone, weathered-look decking and distinctive planting in a private courtyard garden in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire. It reflects the care with materials and construction that Steve Richardson and Rees De Liege bring to S&R Landscapes.

More than 20 tonnes of landscaping materials passed through restricted access to create this secluded space for relaxing and entertaining. Careful organisation was essential to delivering the work within the enclosed garden.

Refreshing an established courtyard garden

The existing courtyard needed a sympathetic update that respected its mature planting and natural stone terrace. The brief was to continue the alpine and succulent planting while refreshing the entertaining area with materials that belonged in the established setting.

The balance between new construction and existing character shaped the project. The finished garden needed to feel settled, with textures and colours that complemented the planting.

Textured decking, stonework and floating seating

Composite decking with a weathered appearance introduces the character of aged timber to the terrace. Its colour and texture work alongside the surrounding stone and plants, creating an inviting place to sit.

TIER split stone walling, supplied by CED Stone, adds depth and texture. Numerous carefully fitted cuts were needed to finish the walling around the garden’s features, demonstrating the importance of patient, precise workmanship.

A floating bench arrangement provides seating amongst the planting. Together, the decking, walling and benches give the courtyard a clear structure while allowing its established character to shine.

Distinctive planting and evening lighting

The existing lighting scheme was extended to bring more atmosphere to the garden after dark. A sculptural Pinus mugo, sourced from Germany, provides a focal point, with its exposed stems taking on a striking appearance when illuminated.

Our approach

We believe a well-designed garden should be a pleasure to live in, thoughtfully built and made to last.

For us, good design starts with listening. We take time to understand how you want to use your garden, what matters to you and the character of your home.

We bring the same care to construction as we do to design. From the preparation beneath a patio to the finishing details around a border, each part contributes to the quality of the whole garden.

We favour materials suited to their purpose and planting that can thrive in its surroundings. We consider how your garden will mature and how much maintenance you want, creating a space you can enjoy for years to come.
