Garden Design and Landscaping in Seer Green
A beautiful garden should feel at home with your property and give you more reasons to spend time outside. Steve and Rees Landscapes design and build gardens in Seer Green, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St Giles and the surrounding Buckinghamshire villages, bringing thoughtful design and practical landscaping together.
This Seer Green garden shows what a complete transformation can achieve. With more than 2,000m² of grounds, mature trees and substantial changes in level, the property offered enormous potential. The owners wanted a garden that felt welcoming, worked for family life and made the most of its established setting.
Completed in 2022, the project forms part of the team’s exemplar portfolio Steve and Rees Landscapes.
A Complete Garden Transformation
The brief began with the mature trees. These gave the garden its character, so the design worked around them, using their shape and shade to guide the layout.
A generous, level lawn would provide room for family activities, while a winding woodland walk would invite the owners to explore. Informal planting would soften the slopes, and a children’s play area would bring adventure without dominating the views from the house.
At the front, the driveway and planting needed to create an arrival that suited the scale and architecture of the property. Every element belonged to one coherent design, from the entrance to the furthest corner of the rear garden.
Lawn Construction and Garden Drainage
Creating the new lawn required substantial work beneath the surface. The team removed more than 160 tonnes of unsuitable, clay-heavy material and reshaped the ground to establish the proposed levels.
Approximately 100 linear metres of subsurface drainage connected to a soakaway. Around 80 tonnes of carefully selected soil were then placed, settled and prepared before the team laid 800 rolls of turf.
The finished lawn gives the family a generous space for games, relaxation and everyday use. Its clean outline also provides a calm foreground to the woodland planting beyond.
For homeowners considering a new lawn in Seer Green, this project demonstrates why ground preparation, levels and drainage deserve as much attention as the turf itself.
A Woodland Walk Beneath Mature Trees
A bark pathway meanders through the wooded part of the garden, edged with rustic treated timber that sits comfortably within the setting.
The route reveals different views of the lawn and house as it passes between the trees. It also brings previously overlooked areas into everyday use, giving the family somewhere to wander without leaving home.
Working with existing trees and natural contours helped this new garden retain the character of an established landscape.
A Garden Designed for Family Adventure
A change in level of almost three metres, combined with a run of approximately 40 metres, provided space for a zip wire.
At the lower end of the garden, a swing beneath a cherry tree adds another place to play. Rocks set into the adjoining bank form a scramble back towards the lawn, connecting the different levels through an activity the children can enjoy.
Together, these features create a family garden with room for adventure while allowing the planting and trees to remain central to its appearance.
Informal Planting with Seasonal Colour
The planting brings softness, texture and seasonal interest to the garden, with different combinations responding to the light and growing conditions across the site.
Ligularia ‘Gregynog Gold’ and Sanguisorba ‘Tanna’ add contrasting forms and colour along the banks near the zip wire. Beneath the willow, hostas and ferns introduce lush foliage to the shaded areas.
On steeper sections, rockery stone helps define and support changes in level. Its irregular shapes sit naturally among the planting, allowing the constructed elements to blend into the wider landscape.
The result is a garden that feels generous and relaxed, with planting that complements the mature trees rather than competing with them.
Front Garden Design with a Welcoming Entrance
Two corresponding planting beds frame the front of the house. Each centres on a Cornus ‘Venus’, with clipped Ilex crenata balls providing evergreen structure.
Stipa tenuissima brings movement and softness, while Centaurea montana ‘Jordy’ adds rich seasonal colour. Subtle lighting draws attention to the planting after dark and creates a warm welcome at the entrance.
This considered combination of trees, evergreen shapes and softer planting gives the frontage interest throughout the year.
A Curved Clay Paver Driveway
The 350m² driveway completes the approach to the property. Rees introduced a sweeping curve that follows the front planting beds, creating a flowing layout that connects the driveway with the garden.
Chelmer Valley handmade clay pavers bring warmth, texture and tonal variation to the surface. Their character complements the house and gives the expansive driveway a more individual appearance.
The finished frontage combines practical access and parking with planting, lighting and craftsmanship, making the entrance an integral part of the garden design.
